Beginnings: A Collaborative Vision
Formed in 1997 at the Billy Graham Center of Wheaton College, ChinaSource began as a collaborative effort of several North American evangelical entities. Recognizing the growing importance of China on the world scene, these organizations came together to create a clearinghouse of information and relationships serving the global Christian community.
Creating Space for Reflection
A year later, we launched the ChinaSource Journal to create space for sustained reflection on Christianity in China. Though it was later renamed ChinaSource Quarterly, we returned to the original name in early 2025.
Gathering for Shared Discernment
Throughout the 2000s, we convened consultations—initially in North America—that brought together leaders from scores of organizations to share updates, reflect on emerging challenges, and explore practical avenues for collaboration.
Broadening the Conversation
In 2000, ChinaSource merged with the Institute of Chinese Studies, a research organization founded in the late 1970s at the US Center for World Mission. This merger strengthened ChinaSource’s research foundation and expanded its engagement in Asia, where consultations increasingly brought together leaders from across regions to deepen shared learning and strategic collaboration.
Responding to a Changing Church
In 2002, we held the first China Challenge conference, providing a venue for North America, agencies and individuals interested in exploring opportunities in China. This conference was held annually until 2011.
With the wave of urban migration sweeping over China in the mid 2000s, the focus of ChinaSource shifted to China’s cities, where a new generation of church leaders was beginning to emerge. To better serve this growing need, we facilitated consultations around urban ministry, business as mission, and migrant worker ministries. These consultations brought together both Chinese and expatriate believers. Multi-agency initiatives were launched in these areas to fuel the development of new ministry efforts.
Extending our Reach
ChinaSource expanded its operations to Hong Kong in 2006. In the 2010s, ChinaSource enlarged its online presence, providing balanced and timely resources through digital content and training programs. Initiatives focused on Christian education, leadership mentoring, and stewardship have continued to bring Western and Overseas Chinese organizations and Chinese Christians together to address evolving needs.
In a season when the roles of both Chinese believers and foreign workers continue to change, ChinaSource remains committed to serving as a trusted resource for thoughtful engagement and a catalyst for effective partnership.
