3 Questions: Tsern TEFL Scholarship

A New Scholarship for English Teachers Preparing for Careers in China

•

The application deadline for the Tsern Teaching English as a Foreign Language Scholarship at Azusa Pacific University (APU) has been extended until May 30, 2018.

We recently talked with Dr. Mary Shepard Wong, Director of Field-based TESOL Programs at APU. Here she introduces this new scholarship, which is designed specifically for MA students preparing to teach in China.

3 Questions

1. What are your expectations for this new program?

Our expectations are to award five $10,000 scholarships each year, (2017-2020), providing the opportunity for at least 20 graduate students to earn their Master's degrees in TESOL while they are concurrently teaching in China.  This award recognizes Christian scholars who will perpetuate the mission of Azusa Pacific University during their academic studies and later as language educators.

2. How did this scholarship come about?

A friend of APU from Taiwan who has a passion for education in China, saw the potential of enabling highly qualified and motivated graduate students to complete their Master's degree through APU while they are teaching in China. He and his family committed to funding up to five graduate students a year with this generous gift.

3. How can prospective students apply?

The Tsern TEFL Scholarship is open to new graduate students who have been accepted to APU’s field-based TESOL program and who are committed to teach English in China during the two years of their academic program.  Applicants must enroll in the program full-time, and should be in good standing with the program and university (not on academic probation or conditionally admitted). Scholarship applications have been extended to May 30, 2018.

For more information see the APU website. Or contact Dr. Mary Wong at [email protected] with your questions.
